From Homeless to Home Buying
We first met AMANDA C EVANS just after she set up Homeless Pembrokeshire and you will find other articles about her here on Pembrokeshire.Online. We know she has been through challenging times, being homeless herself while supporting other homeless people. Its only recently that Amanda has felt free to talk about her personal experiences and we can only express our admiration for all that she has achieved, not just for others, but also for herself. Amanda really knows what it is like to be in dire straits and her compassion for others when she might well have given up and gone under is amazing. “We have just had a huge day for Homeless Pembrokeshire. We picked up not one but two brand new vehicles, free of charge (thanks again SteveGrimes and GRS Motor Group), but that’s not all that happened. I won’t go into too much detail, but on the same day I also entered the final stages of buying my own home.
“It’s so close, it does not seem real. The solicitor has the money, and the contracts are all but done, it’s just a matter of time.
“But this was never a reality that was certain for me. When I fled an unhappy and abusive situation, I became homeless. I slept where I could and I sofa surfed.
“It was covid and I was really busy, not with homelessness, because they solved that issue pretty much, even if it was only a temporary fix. I was busy with delivering food aid, rushing all over Pembrokeshire, picking up food, and dropping it off in communities that were isolated by the bug. We dropped off the food at bus stops, and people distributed it, some of you reading this might remember. The bus stops became ‘bus shops’.
“This frantic activity also saved me, at least for a while. It gave me no time to think too much about myself. But in June 2020 I got pneumonia which slowed me down somewhat.
“Some kind people took me in for some time, but it was never home, it was never mine.
“Covid eventually finished and I managed to find something I could begin to call home, a small flat in Haverfordwest with my dog, Eric, and it has done me until now. But soon I will move on and into my new reality, whether I believe it or not, it is real and it will be my forever home.”
