Help the Hedgehogs

An urgent appeal has gone out for any unused  hamster cages to be left at any of the Pembrokeshire Hogspital drop-off points (see below), as well as old newspapers for bedding and wet dog food in jelly.

Hedgehogs were common when I was a child, but its seems that they are having a particularly challenging time at the moment; the Hogspital is facing unprecedented demand for its help.

At time of writing, all of its 15 cages (the intensive care unit) were occupied by hoglets as young as ten days old and much too tiny to stand any chance of surviving without help.

Climate change may well be playing a big part in the decline of the general population of hedgehogs, with many adults hibernating later and therefore giving birth later. This means that the little ones are not mature enough to cope with the coming winter hibernation.

If you want to help, generally putting out food and water is a good idea; but if you see them out and about in daylight, they may be injured or unwell and you should seek help.

You can also help by dropping dog food in jelly, unused cages and newspapers to drop-off points:
