It’s Hobbit Time

Any Hobbit fans out there? For any of those who like to follow the hairy-footed ones, you should know that they have their very own day of celebration, and it is fast approaching. Yes, Hobbit Day is 22 September and there is so much to appreciate.

For starters, if you want to get into proper Hobbit festivities it is important not to skimp on the food. Hobbits can eat six meals a day and, being very sociable, love to share their grub with their friends. They also love to give gifts, preferably creative little tokens made by their own fair hands, and they love music.

Another aspect of Hobbit life has to be a spirit of adventure, so after scoffing all that lovely food and exchanging some trinkets, exploring somewhere new seems like a good plan.

The book The Hobbit was published in 1937. Written by JRRTolkien for children, it won many awards and is still a firm favourite with children and adults all over the world. It has never been out of print.

Tolkien’s world is peopled with dragons and elves and all manner of interesting and sometimes dangerous creatures. Bilbo Baggins is the main character who sets out upon a quest in a world that is magical and fantastical, where the characters are tested and must overcome obstacles and dangers.

So popular was the book that publishers requested a sequel and The Lord Of The Rings came into being, leading eventually to the epic films, stage plays, radio and board games.

I remember my son’s love of the books as a young child – hours of bedtime reading and then our very own Hobbit adventures where we stepped across some hidden boundary and entered the world of Middle Earth where elves and goblins were real, and trees spoke. I freely admit that when a new Lord of the Rings film came out, we would take the day off and have a morning at the multiplex wrapped in magic, with snacks of course.
