Stay Away from the Seals

It’s hard to believe, but the police have had to be called in to patrol Pwyll Y Wrach following reports that someone has been seen throwing stones at seal pups. This and other reports that, despite warnings, some people have been getting far too close at a time when the breeding season makes the animals very vulnerable are raising concern.

Among the many sightings of female seals along the coast, there have been reports of a dead pup in the area of the Witches’ Cauldron.

Signs have been erected by the Coast Park Authority at areas where seals are known to give birth, asking people to please stay away to give the mums and babies the space necessary.

The police plan to patrol these areas and have issued a warning that it is a criminal offence to intentionally injure, kill or remove seals from their natural habitat. Anyone concerned that a seal is being mistreated or disturbed can phone 101.

If you come across a seal in distress, please call Welsh Marine Life Rescue on 07970 285086 or the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

Codes of conduct for people who are unsure of their responsibilities can be found at Pembrokeshire Marine Code.
