Charity Focus: Greenacres Animal Rescue

The cost-of-living crisis has had an impact on all charities, especially our local ones. More people forced to rely on them is increasing the pressure when they are already stretched. I think it’s important to help our local charities and I wanted to do something to give back to them and the community. Highlighting what some of the charities that mean something to me personally is one way of saying thank you for the great work they do.

The second charity I have chosen is Greenacres Animal Rescue in Haverfordwest. It was opened in 2008 to provide the rescue, care and re-homing of unwanted and abused animals.
Having always loved animals, my husband and I adopted a gorgeous 10-year-old black female cat called Minnie two years ago from them. She is an absolute cutie. We love her so much and wanted to help out the charity.
Greenacres has a number of local charity shops but with the cost-of-living crisis it is really struggling. Vets’ bills in December 2022 totalled £18,000, and with electric and gas bills rising it is having to find an additional £4,000 a month to meet basic costs.
More animals are being taken in at the shelter because people can’t afford to look after them, and more animals in care means more bills. This winter the organisation has had to prioritise the animals it takes in – the ones that are on the list to be put to sleep are the ones in urgent need of treatment which their owners are unable to afford.
As well as donations to the charity, people can also visit their local Greenacres charity shop, volunteer or adopt animals at the centre.
