Charity Focus – with Sian Walker

Many people are feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis. They are finding it hard to live just day to day and have had to give up many things that are now classed as luxuries, just to put food on the table. This crisis has had an impact on all charities, especially our local ones. More people being forced to rely on them is putting on the pressure when they are already stretched. I think it’s important to help our local charities and  I wanted to do something to give back to them and the community. Highlighting what some of the charities that mean something to me personally is  one way of saying thank you for the great work they do.

The first charity I have chosen to highlight is Pembrokeshire Cancer Support in Pembroke Dock.

It was established in 1991 by Doreen  Wormell, who  felt that there was a gap between being diagnosed with cancer and coming to terms with the diagnosis  She set up a support group to help people with cancer, or those who were supporters of people with cancer.

Aiming to give a quality of life to these people as well as support their loved ones, the organisation gained charitable status in 1995.

In 2007 it moved to its current location in Pembroke Dock.

As well as the charity shop run by a fab group of people (new members always welcome), it also offers a number of support services, Monday to  Friday, 10am-2pm.

These services include having a chat, relaxation sessions on a  Wednesday morning, card and craft making on a Tuesday morning, and surviving stress relaxation sessions on a Thursday morning.

There is also a quiet room and it offers complementary therapies .
