Dadorchuddio portread newydd o Santes Non ger y fan lle dywedir iddi roi genedigaeth i Dewi Sant

Mae portread newydd o Santes Non yn cael lle amlwg ar Arfordir Sir Benfro, ger y fan lle dywedir iddi roi genedigaeth i nawddsant Cymru.

Mae’r portread gan yr artist cyfoes, Meinir Mathias, yn portreadu Santes Non yn feichiog ac yn sefyll ar ben clogwyn mewn tywydd stormus. Mae’r portread wedi’i arddangos ar fwrdd gwybodaeth newydd wrth ymyl y llwybr troed sy’n arwain at Gapel Santes Non a’r Ffynnon Sanctaidd yn Nhyddewi.

Yn ôl y chwedl, mae gan y capel a’r ffynnon gysylltiadau cryf â stori geni Dewi Sant, gyda’r ffynnon hyd yn oed yn cael ei hystyried i fod â phwerau i iacháu pobl. Yn y 6ed ganrif cafodd y ddau sant ddylanwad ar ledaeniad Cristnogaeth yn y byd Celtaidd ledled Cymru, Iwerddon, Cernyw a Llydaw.

Dywedodd Meinir: “Cefais fy ngeni yn Sir Benfro ac rwyf wedi treulio llawer o amser yn y dirwedd hon, felly rhywbeth arbennig iawn yw dod â’r elfen hon i’r gwaith a chael y ddelwedd o Santes Non ar yr arfordir. Mae hefyd yn wych tynnu sylw at fenywod hanesyddol Cymru ac, yn benodol, at fam nawddsant Cymru.”

Mae’r panel yn rhan o amrywiaeth eang o waith i wella mynediad at y safle hanesyddol ac ysbrydol pwysig hwn. Mae hyn yn cynnwys gwella’r llwybr troed i ganiatáu mynediad i bobl anabl yn nes at y ffynnon a’r capel. Mae taith gerdded sain hefyd wedi’i chynhyrchu gan yr awdur a’r darlledwr enwog Horatio Clare sy’n rhoi cyfle i bobl o bob cwr o’r byd brofi straeon, cyfrinachau a synau Santes Non.

Mae’r prosiect hwn wedi cael ei gefnogi gan Gysylltiadau Hynafol, sef prosiect treftadaeth, twristiaeth a chelfyddydol cyffrous sy’n cysylltu Gogledd Sir Benfro a Gogledd Wexford, ac sy’n cael ei gyllido gan Gronfa Datblygu Rhanbarthol Ewrop drwy raglen Gydweithredu Iwerddon Cymru, dan arweiniad Cyngor Sir Penfro, ynghyd â’i bartneriaid sef Cyngor Sir Wexford, Awdurdod Parc Cenedlaethol Arfordir Penfro a Visit Wexford.

A new portrait of St Non is taking pride of place on the Pembrokeshire Coast, near the site where she is said to have given birth to Wales’ patron saint.

The portrait by contemporary artist Meinir Mathias depicts a pregnant St Non standing near the clifftop in stormy weather. It is featured on a new information board next to the footpath that leads to St Non’s Chapel and Holy Well in St Davids.

According to legend, both the chapel and well have strong links to the story of the birth of St David, with the well even reputed to have healing powers. Both saints went on to influence the spread of Christianity in the sixth-century Celtic world, across Wales, Ireland, Cornwall and Brittany.

Meinir said: “I was born in Pembrokeshire and have spent a lot of time in this landscape, so to bring this element into the work and to have the image of St Non situated on the coast is quite special. It’s also great to shine some light on historical Welsh women and in particular, the mother of the patron saint of Wales.”

The panel is part of a wide range of work to improve access to this important historical and spiritual site. This includes improvements to the footpath that allows disabled access closer to the well and chapel. There is also a sound walk produced by renowned writer and broadcaster Horatio Clare that enables people from all over the world the chance to experience the stories, secrets and sounds of St Non’s.
