Art Breaks Out onto the Streets

Breakout Gallery is back in Haverfordwest for 2022 with the theme of ‘Connections’.Applications are now open and artists are wanted who would like to display their work on the streets of the town. This year the project has also teamed up with Ogi to paint 25 ‘connection cabinets’ around Haverfordwest.

Breakout Gallery was established in 2016. It hosts an annual exhibition which has gallery-worthy artwork framed and displayed in outdoor public spaces around Haverfordwest. The artwork greatly ranges in size from 1ftx1ft to 8ftx12ft displayed as temporary murals across the town. A guide/map is also be produced; this enables residents and visitors to Haverfordwest to follow the trail and discover all of the artwork.

From last year’s exhibition: Stevie Mitchell’s The View Through the Trees

Last year saw more than 50 visual artists create work for the exhibition, numerous households and businesses provided walls for the work to be displayed. utilising the entire town as exhibition space, making it, without a doubt, Pembrokeshire’s biggest exhibition.

The‘Connections’ theme aims to encourage reconnection and healing after the difficult period we all have all experienced.

Breakout Gallery is looking for artwork that illustrates some kind of connection or gives the viewer a sense of connection. It could illustrate your connection to Haverfordwest, a connection between people, a connection between Haverfordwest and somewhere else… or you could take the theme in a whole new direction.

From last year’s exhibition: Barbara Price’s Snowdrops On the Edge

From this year’s exhibition brief:

Over the past two years the coronavirus pandemic has divided us, severed connections and made it more difficult for us to be present with one another. Our communities are in need of regrowth and regeneration. We need to work together to build creative connections in order to strengthen the positive effects that artwork can have on its surroundings.”

This year the organisers are encouraging and facilitating the Breakout Gallery artists to collaborate with one another on their compositions, adding an exciting new element to what Pembrokeshire art can offer. Breakout Gallery has two primary objectives: to provide artists with new and exciting ways to display and promote their work, and to aid with the regeneration of our county town of Haverfordwest.

Arthur Brooker, the curator and exhibition organiser, says:

“I’m really excited to be organising the exhibition, it has been a fun experience seeing the exhibition growing year after year, and this time is no exception. We are building connections with other organisations such as HaverHub, Ogi, Westival, BEspoke Events and Redhill School, all of whom have been a great help and support. With so many different artists and businesses involved with Breakout I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s exhibition develop and represent Pembrokeshire art in the heart of our beautiful county.”
