Free Trees for Wales
Deputy climate change minister Lee Waters says that to combat climate change we need to plant more trees. In order to do our bit here in Wales 1.3 million trees will be made available by the Welsh Government at a cost of £2m.
Every household in Wales is to be offered a free tree, with a choice of native species to plant in their gardens. Alternatively, a tree can be added to woodland on their behalf by Coed Cadw.
Planting trees has undoubted benefits to the environment, plus to our individual wellbeing; and scientific evidence suggests they help prevent flooding.
People considering planting their own tree should be confident that they can supply water and ensure their tree doesn’t get swamped by other vegetation. Otherwise, the general advice is that trees are tough and usually survive most conditions.
Initially the trees will be available from March at five hubs. A further 20 hubs will have trees in autumn 2022.
The locations of hubs and more information on how to claim your tree will be available online and via a network of volunteers very soon.
