Twin Peaks: Garn Fawr and Garn Fechan

Pembrokeshire abounds in wonderful hills… high places that were once the perfect setting for fortifications.

The twin peaks of Garn Fawr and Garn Fechan, to the south of Strumble Head, both had hill forts on them in ancient times; and today they continue to command the surrounding area.

They also invite the walker to climb to their summits. There is a handy parking area at the foot of Garn Fawr from which you can ascend either or both of them.

Garn Fawr involves the longer walk and the higher height. From here, the view across to the Strumble Head lighthouse is tremendous.

But it is Garn Fechan, with its shorter, steeper climb, that somehow seems to have more atmosphere of wild times past. The view from here too is breathtaking, although the purist might feel there are rather too many vivid blue Portaloos dotted about the green landscape below. They are there to serve the needs of the “glampers” in the yurts at the Hillfort Camping site. But then, who can blame people for wanting to come and spend time outdoors in this spectacular slice of Pembrokeshire?
