Newgale is Unbeatable

There are beaches, there are great beaches… and there is Newgale.

However many times you come over the hills and see that immense stretch of sand, it always stuns.

We know that Pembrokeshire weather can be very different from place to place, but on Newgale beach it can be very different from one end to the other. Heavy rain clouds can hang ominously at one extreme while the sun comes out to illuminate the sand at the other.

There is so much space at Newgale that it could never be crowded – probably not even if the entire population of Pembrokeshire decided to descend on it for the day. In reality, there is so much distance between people that those nearest to you can look like tiny Lowry-esque matchstick figures – or matchsticks belonging to matchstick figures.

On a day hung with mist and cloud, I walked fairly briskly from one end of this amazingly broad beach to the other – a good 45 minutes each way – and enjoyed a meditative experience without time or place.
