Monkstone Beach Stays Closed

The impact of increased rainfall in recent months continues to cause issues along the Pembrokeshire coast, with access to Monkstone Beach to remain closed due to safety concerns.

Following heavy rainfall last November, the steps on the public footpath leading to Monkstone beach were damaged and dislodged. A series of cracks had also appeared in the surface of the footpath, indicating movement of the slope.

The footpath was deemed unsafe for pedestrian use, and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority made a temporary closure to restrict public access, and signage and barriers were put in place.

The authority’s director of nature and tourism, James Parkin, said: “The National Park Authority has sought specialist advice to assess the damage and has been advised that the public footpath should remain closed due to the instability of the slope.

“Our concern for public safety remains the priority and it’s expected that the existing closure order will need to be extended when it expires in May as the longer-term options for the public footpath are assessed.”

While the closure is still in place it means there is no safe way to exit the beach from Monkstone, and anyone walking at low tide on the foreshore from Saundersfoot or from Tenby will need to be aware of this when planning their walk. Signage at key points will be put in place to notify the public, as well as updates on the authority’s website and social media channels.

Penderfynwyd bod y llwybr troed yn anniogel i gerddwyr. Cafodd ei gau dros dro gan Awdurdod Parc Cenedlaethol Arfordir Penfro er mwyn cyfyngu ar fynediad i’r cyhoedd, a rhoddwyd arwyddion a rhwystrau ar waith.

Gan siarad am gau’r llwybr, dywedodd James Parkin, Cyfarwyddwr Natur a Thwristiaeth Awdurdod y Parc: “Mae Awdurdod y Parc Cenedlaethol wedi ceisio cyngor arbenigol i asesu’r difrod ac wedi cael gwybod y dylai’r llwybr cyhoeddus aros ar gau oherwydd ansefydlogrwydd y llethr.

“Diogelwch y cyhoedd yw’r flaenoriaeth o hyd a disgwylir y bydd angen ymestyn y gorchymyn cau presennol pan ddaw i ben ym mis Mai wrth i’r opsiynau tymor hwy ar gyfer y llwybr cyhoeddus gael eu hasesu.”

Tra bo’r llwybr yn dal ar gau, mae’n golygu nad oes ffordd ddiogel o adael y traeth o Monkstone a bydd angen i unrhyw un sy’n cerdded ar y blaendraeth o Saundersfoot neu o Ddinbych-y-pysgod pan fydd llanw isel fod yn ymwybodol o hyn wrth gynllunio eu taith gerdded. Bydd arwyddion yn cael eu gosod ar bwyntiau allweddol i roi gwybod i’r cyhoedd, a bydd yr wybodaeth ddiweddaraf yn cael ei rhoi ar wefan a sianeli cyfryngau cymdeithasol yr Awdurdod.
