Gorgeous Treffgarne Gorge

Some of Pembrokeshire’s best walks seem to be hidden away – like the Treffgarne Gorge.

A good starting point for this walk is the parking space just off the A40 to the west at Wolfscastle, between the bridge over the road and the bridge over the railway.

From there, take the lane that goes under the road and winds into instant green countryside. You’ll pass by a well-ordered cemetery on the left, where the headstones face you in ranks, almost like a theatre audience.

Before long, you’ll find the start of the path proper, on your right… and you need to keep your wits about you to stay on it, paying careful attention to following the occasional markers.

Before long, you will come to a junction where one path goes off to the right, heading beneath a railway bridge; ignore this and instead go the other way, left and upwards, through the ferns. The path becomes clearer as it continues to climb; and it stays fairly obvious as you go up through a plantation of tall trees masquerading as a forest.

Then comes the real beauty, as the “artificial” forest gives way to the real thing.

Finally the path drops you down into an area of habitation south-west of Little Treffgarne Wood. Take a bridleway left – and then sharp right to bring you up to the minor road that runs from Spittal Cross to Mills Bridge. Turn left onto this quiet lane and you’ll soon be at Mill Bridge and taking a left turn to walk over the river and wend your way up to the road.

You are now pretty much on the road that you began on and, winding sharp left and then sharp right, this will take you all the way back to Wolfscastle, through green and lovely country.
