How to Stay Warm This Winter

The following should never be necessary but it seems we will be needing it this winter, so we are sharing this from Homeless Pembrokeshire,  a charity that does so much to advise and support people in difficult circumstances.

What can you do when it’s cold and you cannot afford heating?

Put on layers of clothes.

Multiple thin layers are better than one thick layer. Example: A cardigan over a sweater over a long sleeve shirt.

The thinner the clothes, the closer to the body you should wear them.

See to it that the layers are breathable, if possible

Designate one room as the warm room

It should not be too big.

Make sure that this room’s door is always shut immediately.

Seal it off as well as you can – not airtight, but if you have a serious gap at the door, for example, use rolled-up towels to prevent warm air from escaping the warm room.

If you have candles, light them. You will be surprised how much warmth a candle will give you.

Only leave the warm room if you absolutely must. Your body heat will also add to the room temperature.

Sleep in your clothes or at least multiple layers. However, prevent sweating.

Keep your feet warm at all costs. You can lose quite a bit of body temperature there.

Keep your head warm and covered at all costs. About 60% of your loss of body temperature comes from the head.

Hot water bottles will take the chill off your bed at night and are good to keep on your lap on the settee during the day.
