The Body Positive

From SIAN WALKER

In August I held a one-night-only event promoting my Body Positive Pembrokeshire Photography shoot with photos by Pembrokeshire Studio, near Narberth.

The photoshoot had been inspired by our society today, and the fact that social media plays such a big part in people’s lives. The way you look, the way you dress, the gender you are, the size you are… all seem to matter; and these things are not always a positive influence on us.
I wanted the photoshoot to reflect positivity, confidence in loving your body, feeling beautiful in your skin and achieving a body-positive attitude. I chose to do this through black and white photography after finding out about boudoir photography on the internet and this inspired my idea for the photoshoot. I love black and white photography and thought this would be the perfect way to portray the human body in a tasteful yet beautiful body-confidence-inspiring way.
The photoshoot had taken place in July and there were two models.
The photographer, Belinda Bean, made us feel at ease; she was very welcoming and friendly, and the studio is at her home so it felt like you were taking photos at a friend’s house – a really nice, calm, relaxed atmosphere.
Belinda was brilliant at giving directions to get the best poses and photos from us, and with only two models it meant more time in front of the camera.
I felt amazing wearing a black corset, with my hair curled and my make-up done. It’s not something you do every day so it felt special, getting all dressed up. Faye wore a lovely black, strappy top and shorts.
I had taken my friend with me to watch the photoshoot. Having confidence issues herself, as many people do, by the time she left, she felt more confident, saying that another time she might take part.
I enjoyed the photoshoot so much that I’m looking to do more photography myself. I sent some images off to magazines and one of my photos got chosen but, because I didn’t live in the country where the magazine was published, I couldn’t get any further. The fact I was chosen, though, was a real confidence boost.
The August event was held at the new Pembrokeshire Gin Co building in Pembroke Dock. This is based in the old market and is an excellent venue for different events as it has great indoor and outdoor spaces. Indoors is a small bar and a cosy area with sofas, a great place just to chill out and relax with a drink or two.
My husband and my parents attended, along with my mates from work. All who attended enjoyed the event and went away with a gift bag which included candles and wax melts by Candlier – which can be found on Facebook.
If you would like to have your own photoshoot, get in contact with Pembrokeshire Studio – also on Facebook.
The organiser and model was Sian Phillips and the other model was Faye Brightman.
Sian Walker says: “I have lived in Pembrokeshire all 38 years of my life. Always loved art and writing and did fashion and textiles at college. Started writing poetry in 2012, self-published a poetry book in  2013 and was opening poet at the Celtic Women’s Festival in 2013, where I shared the same stage with the musician Amy Wadge. I also had my own poetry group for two years in Narberth. I love attending the Hay Festival and people-watching while I’m there. I love all things gothic and quirky and I hate plain socks! I also love to travel and have been lucky enough to sail on two tall ships. One of my hobbies is to make artificial wreaths for different occasions and I hope to attend craft fairs with them. I love the beach and am at my happiest when I’m there with the smell of the sea in the air.

She spends her time searching out stories for pembrokeshire.online, swimming in the sea , drawing and painting as Snorkelfish and eating cake. She says "Pembrokeshire.online has been an opportunity to celebrate this beautiful county and its people. Keep the stories coming. We love to hear from you."
